This new dimension, this special segment of reality functions according to its own rules. It has no solid borders and is often as slippery as an icy path in winter. If we try to grasp it, it runs through our fingers like water. The images are sometimes blurred and the sensations go beyond our power of expression. Yet this world has important lessons to teach us. God wouldn’t have given us the ability to dream if he hadn’t thought it was important.

When we begin our journey, we don’t know where the path is going to lead us. The diversity of dream imagery is endless, its potential enormous. The only limit is our imagination and we can never know for sure just how far it can take us. A dream can be the most fulfilling experience or it can lead to agonizing terror. Why do people’s dreams go to such extremes? Where do our nightmares come from and what can we do to stop them?Nightmares are very vivid dreams that provoke anguish and terror. The tension gradually increases until the dreamer can’t take it anymore and wakes up. Nightmares are usually accompanied by physical reactions, such as sweating, an accelerated pulse, the sensation of choking, etc. These symptoms may persist for a while after the dream ends.

The origin of the term goes back a long way in history. In the old times, people used to think bad dreams were caused by a species of demons called 'incubi', which were thought to sit on the chests of the sleepers. In Old English the name for these beings was 'mare', hence comes the word 'nightmare'.

Evidently, the modern explanation has little to do with the mischievous incubi. From a psychological point of view, nightmares are a signal that somewhere, deep inside our mind, there's something that tries to grab our attention. Our subconscious is a place we don’t normally have direct access to. However, things buried in there are constantly knocking at the gate of our conscious mind, trying to break through to the surface. When we block them, they don’t give up but seek another way to make their voice heard. Dreams are a good opportunity for them to do that.

We are, more or less, what we dream. If we are tormented by worries, fears and regrets, all these will be reflected in our dreams. Even old traumas we thought we had got rid of can come back to haunt us in our sleep. People who experience recurring nightmares usually have one or more unsolved issues in their life. These might be phobias, regrets, obsessions or traumas. Their subconscious tries to warn them by sending repeated messages, just like the alarm mechanism of an electrical device. After the issue is solved, the nightmares stop.

To clear the symptoms, one needs to treat the disease. To get rid of the unwanted effects, one needs to identify the cause and eliminate it. So don't let your nightmares scare you. Rather than seeing them as your enemies, treat them as your friends, as messengers from your subconscious. Don’t ignore them, as they will keep crying for your attention until you stop and listen to what they have to say. Their presence is a sign that it’s time to look for some answers deep inside. And as you do, keep in mind Nietzsche’s famous words, “Whatever doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”

Eliminate a Home Allergy

Allergies affect the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide on a daily basis. While allergy symptoms are generally worse during the fall and spring seasons, people with severe allergies may suffer year around.

We will discuss 10 primary causes of allergies in the home and methods you can use right now to control them or even eliminate them. Your indoor home environment is the one place you have control over and with the proper knowledge, a home can be your haven.

1. Animal dander. 1. Many people have at least one family pet of some sort. However, dogs or cats can create havoc for allergy sufferers. Dogs and cats can shed skin flakes just like humans but their skin flakes actually have an oily component to it thus making it dander. In most cases, a person with a dander allergy is sensitive to the protein of the dander and can have upper respiratory symptoms when they breathe it in or even skin rashes when exposed to it.
2. Bacteria. Bacteria is everywhere in the indoor and outdoor environment but it is bacteria particles indoors which can causes a host of upper respiratory symptoms in a person with chronic allergies. The primary breeding ground for bacteria particles is a vacuum cleaner bag. Thousands of new bacteria particles can grow everyday in a vacuum cleaner bag. A standard vacuum with a low efficient paper bag will actually circulate these new bacteria particles into the air each time the vacuum is used.
3. Dust mites. Dust mites are most definitely in the top 3 of all allergens found in the home and are also a common cause of asthma symptoms in the home. They feed on human skin flakes as well as animal dander and produce microscopic fecal matter wherever they exist. Just as animal dander, an allergy sufferer is allergic to the protein found in the fecal matter and not the dust mites themselves.
4. Foods. It is believed that most people on earth have at least one food that they are allergic to. There are literally hundreds of foods which are known to cause allergic symptoms. Food allergies are known to change and will usually get better as we age. However, persons with severe chronic allergies can have them their entire lives.
5. Fragrances. Fragrances from pesticides and perfumes are the most common of these type of allergens. A fragrance is one of the few allergens which can actually create a reaction from just the odor itself.
6. Insect stings and dead insect parts. While most people know someone who is allergic to an insect sting; most persons do not know that breathing in dead insect parts may also cause allergic symptoms. If an insect dies indoors, it will dry out and turn to particle matter in a few weeks time. These insect particles can become airborne and breathed in by an allergy sufferer. Just as other organic allergens, the protein found in the particles is what actually causes allergy reactions.
7. Latex. Latex is a natural substance made from a type of rubber tree. A latex allergy is normally found in the healthcare workplace but can be found in the home with the use of latex based kitchen gloves. Eliminating a latex allergy is as simple as disposing of all latex based products found in the home.
8. Medications. Medication allergies are normally a synergistic effect between other pharmaceutical or over-the-counter drugs. A physicians desk reference or drug manufacturer instructions should be read completely prior to taking any medications. Sometimes interactions are found out following the printing of such instructions and manufacturer web sites should be consulted on a regular basis for new interactions.
9. Molds. We have all been exposed to common molds from childhood since they are found throughout the outdoor environment. They become a problem for allergy sufferers when they invade the indoor environment and amplify on a breeding ground. Common indoor breeding grounds are air conditioning coil boxes, internally insulated supply air plenums and refrigerator drip pans.
10. Pollen. Pollen are believed to be the number one allergen in the world and is the primary cause of seasonal allergies. Some pollens can create indoor allergies when they dry out into small particles and become airborne.

You can eliminate about half of the allergens discussed above by just discontinuing their use however; allergens which are in the form of airborne particles are not so easily controlled. A true H.E.P.A. (High Efficient Particle Air) vacuum cleaner or air purifier is the only scientifically proven devices known to reduce particle allergens from the indoor air. Regular use of H.E.P.A. devices can make a dramatic improvement in allergies while at home. The H.E.P.A. filter maintains its efficiency up to five years of life. I highly recommend that you consider only the highest quality units since there are many H.E.P.A. "type" and inexpensive low-quality H.E.P.A. products on the market.

Can a Good Night Sleep help you lose Weight?

I am not sure if a good night sleep can actually help you lose weight, but it can help you in sticking to your weight loss programs and not sabotaging your efforts in losing weight. Now I am not trying to say that I am a doctor or a sleep researcher, but I am one that likes to get to the real truth behind all the hype by doing a little research and spreading the word. So you say – what does a good night sleep have to do with my weight loss efforts? A good night sleep can have many benefits to one’s health and one of these is in helping you keeping to your weight loss goals. A lack of a good night sleep can lead to better choices and staying to your diet. If you do not have a good night sleep, you will tend to retreat to sugary snacks and caffeinated beverages which can sabotage many of your weight loss progress. Also a lack of sleep has shown to create some hormone imbalances which can greatly influence our eating behavior. Now I did a lot of research on this topic, and cannot say that I follow all of the chemistry behind it, not being a doctor or a chemist; but what they all lead to in the end was that these hormone imbalances lead to cravings for food. It also can defer the feeling of being full after eating a good meal, so you will continue to eat past the point your body really needs. So Yes, a good night sleep may not directly cause you to lose weight, but it will allow you to stay on track with your weight loss program and work toward your weight loss goals. So now that we are all looking to get a good night sleep… What can we do to get a better night sleep? • Avoid watching TV before bed – it is a well known fact that the illuminating flashes of light does not allow your mind to slow down and prepare for sleep – try grabbing a good book! • Avoid any types of sugars or sugary snacks – don’t give yourself that sugary treat for being so good all day right before you go to bed. It will put your body into a blood sugar roller coaster and will lead to an un-restful night sleep • Put your work away well before bed – how are you going to settle down for sleep if you are still working over those numbers or going through that proposal in your mind and not preparing for sleep • Cut out the caffeinated drinks early in the day – you should really cut out these drinks early in the afternoon, and if you are getting a good night sleep you shouldn’t need them to make it through to the end of the day. So now you can see how a good night sleep can help you in maintaining your weight loss goals, and now how to help in getting a better night sleep – what is stopping you – stop reading this and get some sleep!
copied from amazines.com

Top 10 Benefits to Drinking Aloe Vera gel!

1. You should initially make sure that you eat well and sweep and flossing regularly, particularly if you suspectez the bad breath.

The new statistics prove that the dental decomposition is epidemic among the infants in California. Did you know that the dental decomposition could start in childhood early? The advantages of the sifting early and the care of precaution are higher far with the costs to neglect first teeth. Many children will test the dental decomposition when the families delay the dental sifting. The parents and the caregivers of the infants should all work to establish practices known to decrease the dental risk of decomposition.

The teeth of your child can last a life provided you the good oral hygiene of practice. Flossing removes bacteria and prevents the gum disease and also the loss of teeth. Dr. Kimberly Harms, adviser of the consumer for American association dental, known as “the root of all the evil, when it comes to the periodontic disease, is the plate this forms on your teeth every 24 hours. ”Cavities with cancer, the diseases of mouth and throat cause the pain and the incapacity for million Americans every year. By this I mean knowing how to understand and analyze situations in life that affect health. Being able to accurately weigh benefits and risks when making health decisions is very important! Too often decisions are based on incomplete or inaccurate information and this is a huge mistake with significant consequences!

Failure to accurately assess risk keeps people locked in all kinds of unhealthy situations including poor eating and exercise habits (lifestyle), relationships and jobs. Sometimes people are just afraid to step out and make a change. They see "risk" in making a change when the REAL risk comes from NOT making a change. From my perspective, living with the stress, unhappiness and frustration of indecision and poor health is the greatest risk of all, and one that is definitely not worth taking!Accessing "risk" is nothing more than collecting information, weighing the alternatives and then making appropriate decisions based on the information.

Some risks to our health are more "real" than others. For example, it is common knowledge that obesity is associated with a wide variety of health problems. On the other hand, there are some health risks that are so remote we rarely think about them. On a practical level, eating highly processed foods and avoiding a daily dose of fresh fruits and vegetables is rarely considered serious. But, as too many have already discovered, the long range consequences of this practice are real and devastating.

Failure to accurately assess risk limits us in many ways. We imagine the "risk" of talking with our children about drugs, dating or sex and we put off having the "talk," even though the risks of NOT talking are infinitely greater. Fear of flying and public speaking are two more "risks" affecting millions of people. But practically speaking, these fears are unfounded. People ride in cars every day, even though cars are far more dangerous than commercial aircraft! It's a failure to accurately assess risk, and it limits our health, prosperity and pleasure in life.

The goods news is that failure to accurately access risk is reversible! The effects of those decisions to eat inappropriately or NOT to exercise are, as the common expression goes, "do-overs." We can effect positive change in our lives by following a few simple steps to accurately access risk:

1. Accurately define your present situation and access your health "risks". Are you eating a healthy diet? Are you getting enough exercise and good quality sleep? What are the consequences if you DON'T change? Weigh the benefits of healthier living vs the potential risks such as increased cost, inconvenience or discomfort.

2. What do you stand to gain if you change your present circumstances? Assess the "up-side" potential. Too often we look only at the "downside" risk and forget the benefits. What good things might happen if you take the risk and win?

3. Limit the "down-side" if you happen to make a wrong decision. Don't continue down a path if it does not produce results. This is especially important when following weight loss programs. If the pounds are not coming off or if the weight loss is only temporary, find a new program! You not only want to lose weight, but want to sustain the weight loss for as long as possible. Take steps to ensure this will happen. Clear, concise, realistic objectives will definitely help.

4. Reduce your risk by being smart! Understand the situation and seek the advice of experts in the field of health and nutrition. This includes finding and forming partnerships to receive support and get good advice.

5. Have a fall-back position. If the decision you make fails to produce the desired results, be prepared to take a long, hard look at the circumstances and be prepared to change what you are doing.

Everything in life involves some element of risk. Driving your car, meeting someone new, crossing the street...but we do them every day. Winners in life are willing to accept the risk and continue on their way! Get involved, be smart about how you play the game, come prepared for a few failures along the way, but don't quite. You will reap the benefits for your effort and live a happier and healthier life. I like to remember the words of the great Winston Churchill when he said, "Never, never, never give up!"
by : Dan Farrell

8 Healthy Breakfast Tips

A lot of studies and research has shown that kids who eat breakfast perform better in school and have a healthier diet. If a person tries to remember those forgotten names then a conscious effort is to be made for recalling all the things and when this is carried quite seriously then his own memory is improved.
by : Ricky Hussey

Learn How I Prevented Snoring

I want to let you know how I prevented snoring and how you can copy just what I did. I think the main issue with this problem is the lack of common knowledge. What I mean by that statement is that certain subjects just happen to have knowledge that people know, regardless of whether they've been educated on the subject or not. Weight loss is a prime example. Despite most people not being educated on the subject, everyone has a general idea of what they need to do, even if they haven't done it before. The same type of knowledge doesn't exist for snoring and that is really the reason why people don't even try to fix the issue. I'm going to show you how I prevented snoring, so you can do it too.

The first thing that I knew I had to do was figure out exactly why I had this problem. I know from experience that you can't possibly fix a problem if you don't understand it. During my studying I soon learned that the tissue in my throat was causing the sounds. As air traveled through the throat, this tissue would vibrate and create noise. After some more digging I was able to determine that reason this tissue only made noise while I slept. It was due to my jaw sagging down while I was a sleep because the muscles holding it went limp.

It should be pretty obvious how I prevented snoring at this point. I did it by controlling the position of my jaw and keeping it off my throat. I got a simple device known as a jaw supporter and it made it easy to stop this problem.
by : Charles Nash

Five Home Acne Treatments Tips

Over the counter and prescription acne treatments often contain chemicals that many people do not wish to use. Instead, these people search for home treatments for acne. There are many home treatments for acne that actually do work. Here are some things you can try.

1. Apply essential oils, such as Tea Tree Oil, Bergamot Oil, Clove Oil, Lavender Oil, and Rosewood Oil. For sensitive skin, dilute the oil with grapeseed oil. Apply the oil before going to bed at night, then wash it away in the morning with a pure soap, such as Ivory, and clean water.

2. If you are not taking any medications that could cause you to be overly sensitive to the sun, try getting some sunshine everyday. The purpose is not to tan to hide the acne. Instead, the sun actually kills the bacteria, and dries up the sebum oil that produces acne. This is a common home treatment for acne that doesn't cost anything.

3. Acne begins on the inside of the body, not on the surface of the skin. Drink plenty of water - at least eight glasses per day - to help detoxify your body and cure acne. Also eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

4. For home treatment for acne, apply an oatmeal mask at least once or twice a week. Cook oatmeal, and while it is still warm (not scalding hot) apply it to your entire face. Allow the oatmeal to dry, then wash it away. You can also use dried oatmeal, dampened - but not cooked - with warm water as a facial scrub to exfolliate the skin and clean the pores.

5. Avoid eating processed foods, and stick to more natural fruits and vegetables. No food has ever been scientifically proven to cause acne, however, if you have a food allergy, the allergy often results in acne. Many people have food allergies, and go their entire lives without knowing it. Don't assume that a food allergy will leave you unconscious on the floor - the allergic reaction can appear in many forms, like acne breakouts. You can visit an allergist for a simple blood test to find out if you have any food allergies.

There are many other home treatments for acne, some of which work, and some of which do not work. The important thing is to drink plenty of water, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, get plenty of sleep, wash your face at least twice a day, and take vitamins - especially vitamin A and vitamin E
.
By: vishram

Tips To Drop 10 Pounds In A Week

People don’t realize when they keep on eating by giving in to their temptation to food. There are vitamins, herbs, foods, drinks, and easy common things that you can do at home so that you don't have to suffer from allergies.

There are several vitamins, minerals, and herbal remedies that are good at relieving allergy symptoms and strengthening the immune system. Vitamin B5, vitamin A, and Omega-3 Fatty Acids can help to relieve allergy symptoms, such as congestion, coughs, and runny nose. Quercetin is a plant compound that can be found in foods, such as onions, apples, and citrus fruits, that can prevent the secretion of histamine. Histamine is a chemical that the body produces during an allergic reaction that causes sneezing and other symptoms. Butterbur is a herb that is good at relieving hay fever symptoms. Licorice root, astragalus, and capsicum are also good at curing allergy symptoms.
There are foods and drinks that can be used to easy allergy symptoms. Spicy foods, such as hot ginger, cayenne pepper, onion, and garlic, can help to reduce mucous secretion, which can help to clear nasal passages. Honey can be used to help allergies. Taking 1 or 2 teaspoons of locally grown natural honey before the allergy season starts helps the body to get used to pollen before the allergy season is full blown and helps the immune system. Teas such as green tea and Mint Medley herbal tea work well to ease congestion.

There are easy things that can done at home that can help allergies. Cleaning carpets, bedsheets, floors, and curtains at least once a week reduces pollen and allergy in your home. Dust mites are another cause of allergies that are commonly found in bedding, carpets, and pet dander. It is good to wash bedding in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer to kill dust mites. It is also a good idea to enclose mattresses, box springs, and pillows in airtight zipped plastic or special allergy proof plastic. Using an air conditioner can help to clean, recirculate, and dehumidify the air.

Giving pets a regular bath can help to reduce allergies. Washing your hair regularly can help to reduce allergies because hair can hold a lot of pollen when you go outside. Wearing sunglasses when you go outside can reduce the amount of pollen entering the eyes. Nasal Rinses are very effective at removing the pollen stuck in the nasal passages. Doing a nasal rise will drain out some bacteria and mucous and help to reduce allergies.

Natural Acne Treatments - Why Pay For Expensive Solutions When You Can Clear Your Skin Naturally?

It has been reported that every teenager suffers from acne at some point during these years. Obviously some people are affected much more than others and with some it is barely noticeable at all. It becomes even more of a worry when you become an adult and you are still faced with the same problems. This can be particularly distressing as most people assume it it only a problem in youth.

Trying to actually get rid of acne whether you are a teenager or older can be very difficult. The over the counter remedies usually make bold promises but the effectiveness of these varies greatly. The problem I have tended to find is that at best they only provide a temporary fix. If you stop using them for any time at all then acne returns.

That is a big reason that so many people are now turning to natural treatments to clear up problem skin. The big companies which huge marketing budgets have been telling people for a very long time that they need to buy the latest product to solve their blemishes. But as people started to find cures that could clear up their skin within days using only natural products then more people started to take notice.

The basic outline is to follow a good diet which includes drinking water and eating healthy food. Exercise also plays an overall part as it can help with circulation and make you feel much better over time. But the remedy revolves around a body detox which helps to flush out all the bad toxins which cause acne. In most cases these can be done once or twice a year and that can be sufficient to stop acne returning for good in a great number of cases.
by Jane L Green

How to Get Rid of Acne Today - The Most Effective Tips and Methods to Clear Up Your Skin Quickly!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 212px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YMGqH6EFvkk/StrXdaXpI6I/AAAAAAAAABo/jfQkGwGc9j8/s320/acne.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393860404024255394" />Are you having a hard time trying to get rid of acne? Sure, smoking is bad for you - everybody is aware of this. But if you are going to do it you might as well stick to what works best. Over the past few years many people have found that smoking electronic cigarettes is the way to go.

Here are just a few of the benefits of using an electronic cigarette as opposed to the real thing:

1. They are reusable. In the long run, this means that you can save quite a bit of money. You probably know that buying cigarettes on a regular basis is a very expensive habit; this is not the case when you go electronic.

2. No smoke. Why fill your home, car, and office with smoke when you don't have to? To go along with this, cigarette smoke is often times annoying to those around you. With an electronic cigarette you can forget about the foul odor and what others are going to think about you.

3. Cost. You may pay a lot of money for an electronic cigarette package upfront, but remember this: in the long run you will save much more. Since electronic cigarettes are disposable you only have to buy a couple instead of a new pack every day, week, etc.

What do you think? Do the benefits of smoking an electronic cigarette line up with what you are looking for? If so, you should head online and find what you want today.
by :Mr Martin Monskts

5 Magical Ways To Grow Taller

Now, if your height is your gigantic problem in life, don’t falter, don’t lose hope and don’t worry. There are so many ways that can help you solve it systematically. Yes, growing taller is a step by step procedure. You’ll see…… it’s like a magic!

Here are the 5 magical ways on how you can attain it:

1) Always have a good sleep: Taking sufficient sleep of six to eight hours a day every night is the best way to grow taller. It is when you sleep the brain releases growth hormone and starts the dramatic growth process. So you should take enough sleep time to attain the desirable change in your height.

2) Eating the right foods will surely help you ‘go, glow and grow’: Good eating habits and a well balanced diet are also vital ways to grow taller. Why? Because human growth hormone is made up of amino acids which are derived from protein so you must include these nutrients in your diet to boost growth hormones in your body. However, along with protein, vitamin D, carbohydrates, Zinc, and calcium are the essential nutrients that will help in releasing more growth hormones. So, don’t be stubborn. Drink your milk daily for fast bone growth. But mind you, eating too much can also be dangerous to your health. Because eating food late at night will just result to digestion instead of releasing growth hormones. Always discipline yourself so eat your food on time.

3) Stretch. Move. Bend: Exercise is a great way to get taller. This will help trigger growth. Stretching exercise is the best form of exercise to motivate and stimulate your body to grow taller.

4) Sit erect and pose: Don’t you know that posture also plays an important role in height increase? Well, the best way to improve your posture is by sitting and walking with straight backs. When you walk, keep head straight, chin in an upright position, stomach in, chest out, and back straight. By doing this your body can have an awesome appearance and your spines will be stretched.

5) Dress properly to create an illusion: Dressing yourself with right clothes can make you grow taller. This is a good magic because wearing vertical prints, dark colors, a dress having the same colors, loose garments, light weight fabrics, V neck and heeled shoes may also extend the look of your body.

Abracadabra! Follow these tips and you will also experience the magic of growing taller in the quickest and most effective way possible.

By: Howard Kurt

Want to Burn Fat? This statement is rather obvious to all of us. So to build muscle, equally obviously, you need to take proteins. This can be found in eggs, fish meat, cottage cheese or protein concentrates like protein powder.

To appreciate the importance of proteins in your body, you have to understand that your body cells are constantly being replaced by new ones. The tissue, made of protein, is in a state of flux, constantly being changed as old cells die and new cells replace them. Rheo Blair states "It is as if you lived in a building whose bricks were systematically taken out and replaced every year. If you keep the same blueprint then it will still look like the same building. But it won't be the same in actuality. The human body is in a constant state of flux, it loks the same from day to day, but through multiple biological processes, it is always rebuilding itself."

Science has proven that 99% of the atoms in your body are replaced within one year. Every cell in your body is always being recycled. Protein is what is used in the creation of new cells. It is the building blocks of your body. Skin, hair, bones, hormones, and antibodies are formed of protein. Save for water, protein is the most abundant substance in your body. Like other nutrients, proteins are made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. But unlike other nutrients, proteins are the only nutrients that bring nitrogen into the body. Thus by measuring the amount of nitrogen in ones excreta, compared to the amount taken in, one can estimate the amount of protein used for muscle growth. If the difference is positive, then muscle is being made. But if the difference is negative, there is a negative nitrogen balance, and the body literally begins feed on its own muscle to produce energy. Proteins are broken down by digestive acids like protease to smaller units called peptides. This occurs in the stomach where there are acidic conditions necessary for the digestion of proteins. The peptides are in turn are digested by peptidase, found in the duodenum, into amino acids. These are what the body actually absorbs and utilizes to form body tissue, including muscle.

There are 20 amino acids that are required for the normal growth of the body. Eleven of these are naturally made in the body and thus are called non-essential amino acids. The other nine have to be ingested into the body as it cannot synthesize them and are thus called essential amino acids. Foods containing both types of amino acids in the exact amounts as they are needed by the body are called complete proteins. Only when all the essential amino acids are available can the body grow muscles. Otherwise it starts breaking down body tissue to suffice the amount of essential amino acids for growth and repair purposes. Thus lack of these amino acids actually leads to muscle loss.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://aditbelajar.blogspot.com/2009/10/want-to-burn-fat-eat-more-protein-by.html' title='Want to Burn Fat? Most people do. They have a set routine at the gym and it's that routine coupled with the mechanics of the equipment that can lead to trouble--either very quickly or over time.

Here is the problem. Working out can lead to injury, no question. The challenge is in knowing how it can happen and how to prevent it. There are two basic categories of injuries: the sudden accident (a.k.a. trauma) and what can be described as the Process Injury (in other words, the long, slow development of a condition.) My goal is to protect you from both types of injury.

Traumatic Injury at the Gym

Let's start with the 5 basic concepts of working out in order to show you how easy it is to injure yourself in a traumatic way.

* Intensity: How hard you work out.
* Frequency: How often you work out.
* Duration: How long you work out.
* Progressive Resistance: Using more resistance with each set you perform.
* Progressive Overload: Starting at a higher level of resistance at subsequent workouts.

Each one of these principles has the ability to cause injury. But when you couple them with having a trainer or workout partner egging you on to eek out one more rep as you get fatigued, you go into all kinds of contorted positions to get the job done.

All of a sudden, Bam-O! A hundred different injuries can happen. And they will take a long time to heal. You will have defeated the entire purpose of going to the gym in the first place.

Please understand that the body can tolerate a lot of abuse before you pay the penalty of an injury. Just know that injuries can happen in seconds and the effects can last a lifetime.

Injury as a Process

Traumatic injuries do happen. But more often it is the slow progression injuries that are far more sinister and very well may be the root cause of some traumatic injuries. So I would like to focus on what happens over the long term so that you can make a change now to prevent injuries.

I have spent the last 10 years of my life dealing specifically with what are called muscle imbalances and their effects on the back and body. In describing the concept I will use some examples and try to make you aware of what possible injuries you could be facing.

Let me begin by describing what muscle imbalances are and then give you an example. Muscle imbalance can be defined as strength and flexibility of one muscle group compared to the opposite muscle group. So if you compare the strength and flexibility of the quadriceps to the opposite muscle group, the hamstrings, in nine out of 10 people the quads will be overly strong and overly tight compared to the hamstrings. That's the definition of having a muscle imbalance.

How Back and Body Injures Start!

The quads are always going to be stronger then the hamstrings, so you may be wondering what is wrong with that. Let me give you some possible examples of what can happen if your quads are out of balance with your hamstrings. As I give this example, understand that there are other imbalances that often happen at the same time to develop this condition. For example, the hip flexors and the glutes can be out of balance too.

When the quads are out of balance with the hamstrings, there can be uneven and excessive wear and tear on the cartilage and ligaments of the knee. The knee will not function correctly and conditions will develop to the point were running or physical activity will be impossible.

Second, balance between the quads and the hamstrings keep the pelvis in a neutral and stable position. But when you have overly strong and overly tight quads, your pelvis will be pulled in several different directions. In some cases the whole pelvis is pulled excessively forward. In other cases one side of the pelvis comes even more forward and the hip goes too high, causing the pelvis to rotate. This is very common in physically active women over 40.

When the pelvis is not in the most neutral and most stable position possible, the spine may go into abnormal curvature. It is that abnormal curvature caused by the muscle imbalance that can set you up for hip problems, SI joint problems, back problems and sciatica.

How Does This Happen?

The very equipment you are using at the gym is either directly or indirectly helping you develop your muscle imbalances and setting you up for future problems.

Let me give you some examples. You cannot help but develop raw quad strength when you use the leg extension machine. As I asked you before, do you stick to exercises that you like to do? Let's face it, everyone hates to work the hamstrings because they are weak and it is hard to do. So most people overwork their quads and under-work their hamstrings.

Another example is the calf raise machine. Again, the calf muscle will always be stronger then the muscles in front of the shin, but when you blast your calves and do not work the muscles in the front of the shin you are setting yourself up for planter fasciitis, heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis and even knee problems.

Let me recap. Working out with gym equipment puts enormous unnatural force through the joint, restricts movements to linear motions and can very easily overdevelop muscle groups. This combined with the development to muscle imbalancesis a hidden root cause of most if not all physical injuries at the gym.

Action Steps

As with any new desire to make a change in your life, you must first have a starting point. There is no easer way to get started then to take an inventory of where you are right now. It will not help you at all to make subjective assessments about yourself and not be honest, so I have a few suggestions:

* Take photos of yourself. I would not always recommend this. But in cases were your health and wellness are at stake, why not? Here is what you can do. Put on a bathing suit and have someone take photos, front, back and both sides, making sure that you see head to toe. Then take a look--not with a judging eye but a caring eye, looking for areas that are not in balance. For example, is your head straight? Is your head over your shoulders or is it forward of your shoulders? Are your shoulders level? What about your hips, are they level? (Look at your side view and suit line as a guide.)

Those are just some of the areas that you can gauge yourself on. You can also use the photos as a reference of how you are now so you can look back at how you were then.

* Feel the pain. The best way to assess pain is by asking yourself how you feel in the morning, during the day and at night. With this one you will need to be honest with yourself, and I suggest that you write this down. You can even mark up the photos you took by writing on them at the body part or parts where you feel pain.

* Listen to your body. If you are working out and you feel a little something and you're not quite sure what it is, rest assured it's your body telling you it does not like what you are doing to it.

* Build your awareness. If you live with fear, worry or doubt about your weight, health or medical condition, the best way to overcome that it is to build your knowledge on the subject. Study what others already know. And remember to always stay enthusiastic about the process. That is the secret to achieving your goals.

If you do not mind I would like to end with a short story of a one of my clients. She is a 43-year-old professional with a desk job. One day she decided that she was going to lose 20 pounds by summer. So she joined the gym, where she took a spinning class, used weights and at the same time trained for a 6K run on Memorial Day. She did this for about four months. Fast-forward to race day. She starts the race and within the first mile she knows she is in trouble. But she decides to finish the race because the pain is not that bad.

I get a call that night. She tells me that she cannot walk and asks if massage would help. I go over that same night. When I get there she is on churches. She cannot walk. She has foot pain, knee pain and the effects of Piriformis irritation. I agree to work with her and only do what she can tolerate. I then urge her to see a doctor. On Monday morning, she does.

At the appointment she was diagnosed with a bone spur in her heal, a stress fracture on her tibia by the knee and wicked Piriformis Syndrome. As I write this, two months later, she still has not been able to return to any physical activity.

Listen to your body its telling you something...

The study is published online in the current issue of The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. It pooled data from two earlier studies by the Harvard Nurses Health Study and the St. George’s Hospital Study that alleged that people with the highest levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH)D, had the lowest incidences of breast cancer.

The research was based on 1,760 cases of individuals in the two studies and divided them into five equal groups, from the lowest 25(OH)D at less than 13 nanograms per milliliter, to the highest group with 52 nanograms per milliliter.

"The data were very clear, showing that individuals in the group with the lowest blood levels had the highest rates of breast cancer, and the breast cancer rates dropped as the blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D increased," said study co-author Cedric Garland, Dr.P.H. "The serum level associated with a 50 percent reduction in risk could be maintained by taking 2,000 international units of vitamin D3 daily plus, when the weather permits, spending 10 to 15 minutes a day in the sun."

However, women are warned not to run out and start supplementing their diet. There may be other factors that were overlooked in these studies. While the reports are valid, and the research solid, they only represent 1,760 people out of the entire population.

"Meta-analysis is an important tool for revealing trends that may not be apparent in a single study," said co-author Sharif B. Mohr, M.P.H. "Pooling of independent but similar studies increases precision, and therefore the confidence level of the findings."

The authors recommend further research to study individuals for the effect of vitamin D from sunlight, diet and supplements on the risk of cancer.

The dose-response data on 1,448 people in the study were put into order by serum 25(OH)D level and then divided into five equal groups, from the lowest blood levels to the highest.

Co-author Edward D. Gorham, Ph.D said: "We project a two-thirds reduction in incidence with serum levels of 46ng/ml, which corresponds to a daily intake of 2,000 IU of vitamin D3. This would be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and 10 to 15 minutes per day in the sun."

Vitamin D3 is available through diet, supplements and exposure to sunlight, or ultraviolet B (UVB) as long as the skin does not tan or burn. In a white woman, it will only take 10 minutes at noontime on a clear day, with 50 per cent skin exposure, to absorb adequate vitamin D. Darker skin will require up to 25 minutes.

It is important to eat a balanced diet. Vitamin D is linked to Calcium absorption, so overdosing on one will throw out the balance and may result in a depletion of one vitamin.

The reports continued and measured Vitamin D’s ability to prevent colorectal cancer and found similar results.

by ethan miller

I call it The Hurdle. The drill can be done anywhere, but you will need a few feet of space to your left and right to do it properly.

Pretend that you have two hurdles to one side of you. Hurdles like they use in track races. All you have to do is act like you are stepping over one of them and then ducking under the other one. After you've ducked under the second one, do it back in the other direction to your original starting position.

This deceivingly simple exercise gets your whole body moving and is great for loosening the legs, hips and lower back in particular.

You can repeat this for as long as you like or just add it into your regular warm up routine and do it once or twice. You can also pretend that there is a huge row of hurdles instead of just two. The exercise will really get your heart pumping and warm you up for the real workout.

You can also use this exercise as a cool down after your workout. Try doing it nice and slow. You'll feel the stretch and bring your heart rate down at the same time. It's also a great exercise for quickly loosening yourself up if you are sore after a previous days workout.

Give it a try, I'm sure you'll like it! It's a fun way to get warmed up and is very effective. Feel free to come up with your own variations and make it fun.

By: Sheila Jonstone
